Following his foot injury in podium training, Germany's Fabian Hambüchen said that he is reconsidering his competitive schedule for next year. "I didn't have a break from competition this year at all. I tried to please everybody. I've realised that sometimes you have to be a bit more selfish and look after your own interests. Of course I understand that, for example, the Champion's Trophy will probably run into problems [without me competing] but I tried to make everybody happy and in the end I'm the one who ends up sitting in the stands with an injury," he stated at a press conference on Thursday. Hambüchen's 2009 schedule included not only World and European Championships but also the Japan Cup and the multi-stop Champion's Trophy, which was created especially to showcase his all-around abilities. For the upcoming year, he is now looking to compete at less events. "Of course, not competing at Worlds is not what I'm looking at but for other events like German Nationals, Japan Cup etc. I really have to evaluate whether I have enough strength and what short of shape I'm in."
Hambüchen was very positive about the recovery process from his injury. "There is no swelling. The physiotherapist has indicated I'll be unable to train fully for 4 to 6 weeks. Floor and vault will probably take longer. Luckily, it seems like there was no bone damage."
