Ksenia Afanasyeva (Russia) has had to withdraw from the 2009 World Championships due to a recurring back injury. The 18-year-old, who according to the Russian Gymnastics Federation has already returned to Moscow, took the silver medal in the all-around at this year's European Championships and had been considered a medal contender in London. A member of Russia's 2008 Olympic team, Afanasyeva recently won beam and floor at the Russian Cup and was scheduled to compete on all four apparatus at the World Championships.
