Kuksenkov Out Of European Championships
Mykola Kuksenkov, seventh all-around at the 2011 World Championships and fourth in 2010, will miss the upcoming European Championships in Montpellier because of a foot injury. Ukrainian sports newspaper Sport Express reports he injured the foot on a tumbling pass, damaging ligaments and the capsule as well a suffering a fracture. “The doctors have assured us that a surgical intervention is not necessary,” father and coach Yuliy Kuksenkov is quoted. The team will have to do without Vitali Nakonechnyi in Montpellier as well who is also injured.
The injuries are a blow to the young Ukrainian team that has been rising back up the ranks lately. They placed fifth in Tokyo and brought some impressive gymnastics to the Olympic Test Event in January. Youth Olympic Games champion Oleg Stepko also suffered a foot injury in early May but will be able to compete in Montpellier. The team will be completed by Petr Pakhnyuk and Maxim Semyankiv in place of Kuksenkov and Nakonechnyi.
