Chinese Lead the Way at Fifth
Stella Zakharova Cup
Kiev, UKRAINE: The last weekend, in the city of Kiev took
place the fifth edition of the Zakharova Cup. Gymnasts from Ukraine,
Belarus, China, Japana, Czech Republic, Israel, Croatia, Kazhastan,
Greece, Hungary, Canada and Belgium competed under the new code
of points in preparation for the World Championships.
Held in the same weekend of Cottbus World Cup event, the Ukranian
men's team were not present in this competition, giving room for
the youngers to compete. On the other hand, as a test for the upcoming
European Champions in late April, the women's tem appeared in full
potential despite the absence of Dariya Zgoba who is scheduled
to compete at the Friendship Classic this weekend.
China was the clear dominator of the field claiming the victory
in the men's team competition and both all around titles. The men's
team had an excellent performance on the first day with first and
second position in the all around from Diung Liu and Mingshieng
Liang but couldn't match up the results in the event finals
day. In the women's side, Ukrania 1 won the team competition in
a close battle with China, who came second with a brilliant beam
rotation. Ukraine 2 took the bronze over a young Czech Republic
team that included up and comping juniors Kriztina Palesova
and Eva Verbova.
The main attraction of the weekend was the return of Alina Kozich
and the debut of her sister, Olgha Kozich, in the senior
team. A good meet for the Kozich family with a fourth place
for Olga and an eighth for Alina. The all around was won by Chinese
Zhang Xing while the new-to-the-scene Ukranian Anastasiya
Koval took the second place over the more experienced Marina
Kostyuchenko.
In the event finals, a wider range of nations took the medals. Japanese
men's gymnasts took gold on pommel horse, vault and parallel bars,
while Ukranian Sergei Vialsev won rings, Belarrusian Oleksandr
Tsarevich high bar, and Greek Eleftorios Kosmikids did
the same with floor. In the women's competition, Ukranian Valeriya
Maksyuta won vault averaging a 14.25, wilie young Czech stand
out Kriztina Palesvoa took the first place over the Chinese
on bars. Chinese gymnast Zhang Xin added a second gold to
her weekend with the triumph on beam and experienced gymnasts Olga
Sherbatykh won floor.
